This year’s Diocesan Assembly will be held on Saturday 26th May, 9.30am - 4pm at
the Samworth Enterprise Academy in Leicester. I am emailing to let you know more
details about this event. This year's Assembly is quite different in style and focus
from previous Assemblies in that, as well as provision for adults, there will also
be significant opportunities for children, young people and the whole family to engage
and explore more of the Christian story.
The day is connecting with the theme of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Activities
planned are as diverse as fire-eating and Messy Church, jemba drumming and Godly
Play, sports coaching and interactive prayer spaces, an art exhibition and inflatable
Noah’s Ark! There’s also a speakers venue which will play host to best selling author
and theologian, Graham Tomlin; Messy Church creator Lucy Moore; Faith Advisor to
the 2012 Games, Duncan Green and marathon running priest Janet Bibb. Church of England
schools are going to be invited to teach children a specially commissioned song which
will then be sung during the closing ceremony style service and invites are being
given to school children across the county and city.
Also, as well as being for churchgoers, it has a strongly missional feel and so you
might like to think if there are those on the fringes of your churches you or others
you know might make a personal invitation. This might be a friend, neighbour or work
colleague. It might be personally inviting a toddlers or children’s group, or even
organising a bus for those from a local school to come along. The whole day is free
and no booking is required. The ribbon cutting is at 9:30am and the Festival service
finishes at 4pm. People are welcome to come for some or all of the day as suits.
There will be a cafe available selling food from snacks to lunches or you may prefer
to bring packed lunches.
