Men’s Walks (and breakfasts!)

History

The first in the current cycle of walks took place on an evening in June 2011 around Thornton Reservoir with food and drink afterwards at the Bricklayers Arms.  The second one was in the Shackerstone area in the September followed by a meal at the Rising Sun.  These walks were very enjoyable and proving popular but, as the evenings were drawing in, it was suggested that  we should try an early Saturday morning walk followed by breakfast.  The first of these was in the Breedon area on Saturday the 3rd December ending with breakfast at the garden centre.

During 2012 there were six walks at regular intervals in the following areas, Swithland Woods, Cattow’s Farm, Forest Hill, Sutton Wharf, Staunton Harold and again at Forest Hill all followed by a FULL English breakfast.

Following the success of these walks, the format was changed to become a morning walk with breakfast.

Numbers on each walk, tend to vary between 5 and 16 from about 20 participants overall.  The terrain has also been varied and challenging for some at times with as many as 12 stiles on one route but we have been blessed with reasonable to good weather and only had light rain at the start of two walks.  The walks themselves take approximately one hour.

Forthcoming walks are always announced in church and published on the web site message board and in the pew leaflet. For more details contact the walk coordinator Alan Liggins on 07941783937

Please see the Men’s Walk Gallery for some selected photos of past walks.

St. David’s Men’s Walks – not forgetting the breakfasts!  – An invitation.

Our walks are varied and have been around, for example,  the nature reserves at Albert Village, with breakfast at the Lakeside restaurant, a walk around the Pilling’s Lock area of Barrow-on-Soar, with breakfast at the Lock restaurant, a walk in the Outwoods area with breakfast at Longcliffe Golf Club and walks around Packington and Botcheston to name but a few!

Most walks are fairly short – three or four miles or so – but can be full of ‘challenges’, such as sticky ankle-deep mud, difficult stiles, brambles and slippery ground – but everyone takes these in their stride, and there is always a happy atmosphere and friendly banter.  Walks are arranged every few weeks and both the walks and breakfast venues are meticulously planned and checked in advance by Adrian Bristoll. The current walks coordinator is Alan Liggins (see above).

It is not a requirement to be a member of St. David’s, or any other, church and anyone from the local community is welcome to join us. If you would like to come along on any future walk and try it for yourself, please keep an eye on the church website ‘message board’, or the weekly news leaflet at church for details of our next walk. We normally meet at around 8.15 – 8.30am at St. David’s to arrange shared transport to the starting point of the walk. You will need suitable walking attire, especially footwear, as the weather may not always be good, especially in winter – but we have not had to postpone or abandon a walk yet! The only cost to anyone attending will be for breakfast – which is usually very reasonably priced and invariably delicious.
