Coming to St. David’s for the first time?

Not sure what to do?

Worried that you might not ‘fit in’ or do something wrong?

Of course you may find it a little strange entering a building full of people you don't know, and we try to be as welcoming as we can. You will see one or two people wearing a ‘Welcomer’ badge and they are there to answer any queries or concerns you may have, and to make you feel at home. Please feel free to chat to them at any time

The sidesmen will give you a pew leaflet, an order of service and any other items you will need. Hymn books and bibles are in the pews.

Feel free to sit anywhere you like, except in the choir pews right at the back of church. You will get a good ‘view’ anywhere in St. David’s, but at some services, such as the family service we sometimes use an overhead projector - so if your eyesight is perhaps not as good as it was a seat nearer the front may be best!

As an Anglican church, most of our services use a defined Order of Service which will be given to you by the sidesmen when you arrive, and so everything will be easy to follow.

There are usually three services each Sunday - at 8.00am, 10.00am and at 6.00pm.

There is also a service of Holy Communion every Thursday at 10.00am

The 8.00am Sunday service is a traditional service of Holy Communion (a ‘said’ service without music) held in the Lady Chapel.

The other Sunday services take a different form depending on the Sunday in the month generally as outlined below. Occasionally the services take on a different form - such as on Thanksgiving Sunday or for a service of favourite hymns and readings. Any special services will be indicated on this site for the appropriate Sunday.

On the first Sunday of the month we have our ‘Family Service’ which is a very informal service geared towards the whole family and may include sketches and children’s items. The music at this service is led by the music group. Holy Communion will be held at our 6.00pm service.

On the second and fourth (and fifth Sunday if there is one) we have a traditional Holy Communion Service at 10.00am and Evening Worship at 6.00pm. Music at these services is led by the choir and organ.

On the third  Sunday of the month we have Morning Service which doesn’t include Holy Communion, and where the music is provided by the music group. Holy Communion is held at the evening service at 6.00pm.

At Holy Communion services all confirmed Christians of any denomination are welcome to take bread and wine with us. If you are not confirmed, please come to the communion rail for a blessing, holding a hymn book or bible to indicate you are not taking the bread and wine, or simply stay seated.

St. David’s is equipped with an amplified sound system and an induction loop, and so everyone should be able to hear and follow what is happening.

Most services last for about an hour, give or take a few minutes. After morning services tea, coffee and fellowship is available in the church hall, and everyone is encouraged to stay on for a few minutes to have a drink and a chat. After evening services tea and coffee are served in the church foyer.

A question which newcomers often ask is -"How do I know when to stand up or sit down?" Don’t worry! Just follow everyone else. We normally stand to sing hymns. During a service it is indicated when to stand or sit. Some people kneel during prayers, but most just stay seated and bow their heads. It really doesn’t matter, and no one will be judgemental. If you have mobility problems and find it difficult to stand, just stay seated. There is provision for wheelchair users, and the church itself is very easy for wheelchair and disabled visitors to access.

‘Will there be a collection?’ Yes - a plate will be passed along the pews at some point during all morning services to accept an offering towards the work of the church. Please don’t feel obliged to contribute - no-one will notice or comment if you don’t. In fact, many regular members use our planned giving service to make regular payments, and so many people will not use the collection plate at services. At evening services the collection plate is not passed round, but is left on the table at the back of church for anyone to use as they wish on arrival.

We do hope that the above answers any questions or misgiving you may have about coming to St. David’s for the first time - and we do hope that you will feel that you have been welcomed to our church, whatever your reason for coming on this occasion. We would really like to see you again - but if you have any doubts or problems you would like to discuss, please contact someone. See our Contacts page for contact details.
